Today, we are back to the ‘discussion of quote format’ :
TODAY’S QUOTE
“Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.“
Cyril Connolly.
➰➰➰
I think that this quote is specifically more pertinent to bloggers.
A person who writes for public consumption seldom can do it to just satisfy their own selves. Any person who wants his books to be sold, wants to become a bestseller wouldn’t get there by just writing for themselves only.
When I started writing my blog, my objective was to just write. When I got a few people reading and commenting on my posts, I was motivated to write better and include more diverse topics in my writing.
In my writing, I aim to write positive posts/ poems, try to inspire people, and to amuse them. This all indicates that I do write for others as well as myself. When I’m happy it reflects in my writing and when I’m conflicted or sad, that too shows in my writing. I think you cannot separate the person writing from what they are penning down. It’s an expression of their self if they so desire.
To be very honest, though I don’t write to please others, I do want them to find my writing enjoyable. That’s why I refrain from writing similar stories or repeating myself too often. Does that mean that I’ve no self?
I think this quote doesn’t encompasses the whole spirit of writing. Maybe it is true for some aspects of writing, but not most of it.
What do you think?

Wise words Sadje. The public viewpoint can waffle or wain. If you write for yourself, you’ll always be happy. Okay, you may notice an edit or two, but the end of the day, you’ll still be happy.

Yes very true. If I’m not satisfied with what I write, I won’t write.

I think that a writer can be anyone that they want, because they are able to use their imagination.

I agree with you Sadje. Well said. There is a balance between audience and writing.

Thanks Suzette. Yes there has to be a balance. Otherwise we may very well write a private diary

Absolutely agree with you..what makes us writers is that we write about what we feel deeply about. And if we find readers who find joy or appreciate our work along the way, then that’s just the icing on the cake 🙂

As a blogger I consider my blog as as an escape pod, one which allows me to venture into a territory of like-minded people, whom I may never meet in person but I can click with them instantly. Writing on blog has allowed me this.

Love this analogy Hammad. It is an escape alright. 😻

I think your writing does reflect who you are. If improving our writing attracts more readers, that’s a good thing, not losing our sense of self.

The key part of the quote for me is, “and have no self.” Cyril Connolly was contrasting two extremes. Fortunately, none of us has to make such an arbitrary choice!

Fortunately! Sometimes the quote just takes part of the reality in picture. Thanks Rachel.

profound wisdom as usual Sadje … we do write for ourselves but it feels great when others respond warmly!

This is someone who hasn’t written much and hasn’t gotten very far in the writing world. He has opinions, but nothing much to back them up.

I think he was quite a successful writer. At least the Google says so.

I write what I want to write and I consider the audience. Considering the audience and people pleasing are different things. I think what really matters is the part “and have no self”. It’s important to know who we are and (do our best to) always be kind. Outside of these things, 🤷🏻♀️.❤️

Hi Sadje,
I can totally relate to you.
Currently, I’m recognising and introducing new topics to my blog.
I have wide interests in Socio-economic topics. Then I don’t want to bore readers with tonnes of theory.
Anything relatable and relevant would be sufficient.

Very true Lokesh. Write on your favorite topics and explain them to b your reader. I’m sure they’ll love it.

Well said, Sadje. You can write for yourself in the diary but when you publish it must be presentable as well. My opinion.
