Here’s what to do:
Write a poem using ONE of the portraits above painted by Thorvald Hellesen, as your inspiration. There is no required form for the poem. Be sure to give credit to Hellesen by listing his name, the name of the portrait chosen and date it was painted.

A gentleman sitting at leisure
Expressions pensive, reflective
Perhaps thorny problems irking
Or trouble with home and love life
A person may appear at ease, relaxed
But there may be storms raging inside
Judging a book by its cover, we may fall short
Look into his heart or mind, we cannot

Beautifully penned! What lingers in the mind of another…who can tell.

Yes, that’s so true. We guess, and often incorrectly.

Nicely done! I was also moved by that portrait, but haven’t managed to put it into words.

That is how I see it too! He is slightly annoyed that he has been kept waiting. When I first wrote my piece I saw it differently but then after reading through so many my ideas changed.

Sadje, it’s been so much fun looking at what people have imagined about the paintings, but you are right, nobody knows what’s really going on inside. Nicely captured.
