Sleeping lightly, I am suddenly awake
Is it night yet or has morning arrived
I check my watch, alas it is only 1:30 a m
I twist and turn, trying to find a comfortable position
I beat my pillow into submission, get my blanket just right
But the elusive sleep……… refuses to come even when invited
I turn the light on and get up, giving up on sleep
This light sleep is a gift from my thyroid medication
Now I can try to go back to sleep with the help of some medication
Or stay awake till my body is tired enough to want to sleep
I don’t have to get up early in the morning, I can sleep in
So I go out of my room and start to walk, hoping to tire myself
And then perhaps I’ll be able to fall asleep, way past morning!

Your prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “morning.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

When sleeping is a problem, stress is the likely cause and could be psychological or physical or both. I sometimes back had a problem like this one and my solution to this was to try and tire my brains reading books till midnight when I am ready to sleep. Next in bed till morning. Now I have my mobile device to fight sleeplessness.

Yes indeed. It was the situation when I had my foot surgery. Daily I had to take meds for sleeping

Wishing you better sleep, Sadje. Mine has been pretty good lately, and I hope that continues 💜

If I have trouble sleeping I tune into a radio news channel and it’s usually so boring that it sends me to sleep in minutes!

Well my husband is sleeping next to me so I can’t do that. Besides I haven’t listened to the radio in ages.

I hope that eventually after all your efforts, that you managed to get some sleep. You did try very hard. I mean the “beating the pillow in into submission part”…I totally get that!

When I was young I had no problem with sleep. But these days it is s struggle to go to sleep and stay asleep for the whole night. Maybe because I am less active now?

It could be that. Also insomnia is related to getting older and acquiring the maladies of age. Walking helps.

I don’t have thyroid medication to blame but I have a similar routine at night, blaming it on hormones.

Hormones do play havoc with our sleep when they are out of sync.

I feel your pain with this one Sadje. At it’s extreme it can be 5am, 6am before I’m ready to sleep … so if its a work day, I am up at 5.30/6am so no sleep. Regrettably this has almost just become part of life and its more noticeable the nights I sleep well. The doctors can’t do much about it, so I have to just try to manage it as best I can. I’m glad your own situation is improving 🙂

Thanks Brenda. It’s tough to go through a full day without good sleep.

It is. If I’m in class, I think adrenaline keeps me going. Otherwise, I try to do lighter tasks, admin etc. I think its also important to try not to stress about not sleeping.

You’re right, the more we worry about not sleeping the less we sleep.

Sleep issues plauge many. Sometimes relaxation breathing helps, but also getting up and changing your location is also good. Our sleep cycles are interesting. Some dreams can be nightmares.
Some say naps are good and others say don’t nap. I say when one is retired we can sleep in or nap when we want. Stay healthy and well. Worry less and stay healthy (((Hugs)))

I once put my hubby to sleep with having him tensing and relaxing different muscle groups starting at the toes and working up… 🙂
