For the water!

October 10, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story that expresses the idea, “for the water.” You can find inspiration in water protection movements. Is it a celebration or a dark dystopian warning? Consider your place and the bodies of water that have shaped you. Go where the prompt leads!

People can sell their souls for a glass of fresh water

They’d murder to quench their raging thirst with water

What flows unchecked through our open taps

Can fill a pail for someone who needs clean water

We use water to wash our cars and driveways when

Some people have no drinking water for miles around them

Can you comprehend this dichotomy between people

Those from rich countries and those belonging to poor countries

Where children cry and can only be given a few drops of water

And some water their lawns with sprinklers on 24/7

Can you imagine?

  1. Clean water, free from pollutants, becomes ever more precious. Those who are on municipal water systems are paying a fortune for their water. I don’t believe in manicured lawns that need mega-water to look good. I do water some of my flowers on stretches of drought but it isn’t a huge amount. It ends up going back into the ground, which is where my well draws water from.

  2. An excellent post written from the heart, Sadje. The haves and have nots – the philosophy trickles down to something so basic that we take for granted: a simple cup of water. Quite an eye-opening piece. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Sadje. 🌹
