August 28, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story that features a red convertible. Who is driving or riding? Where is the car going? Maybe it isn’t even a car. Have fun and go where the prompt leads!
➰➰➰
When Alfred realized his dream of owning a red convertible, he became very stingy and possessive about anyone touching or using his precious car.
He even demanded that anyone admiring it should wear cotton gloves before laying a hand on its glossy surface.
Cynthia, his girlfriend got so fed up with his concern for his car, more than her, that she refused to set foot in it. He was shunned by his friends for the same reason.
The result of this over-obsessive attitude was that he became a loner who spent most of his time alone with his car.

My cousin had a white 1969 Corvette that he never drove. He spent all of his time polishing it and he would have it towed to car shows so others could admire it.

Wow! I could never do that.

I know, as I always thought it was crazy to have such a nice car and never drive it. My cousin had the car as an investment, so he didn’t want to put any miles on it, and he made a nice profit when he sold it.

But he never got to enjoy it. What a waste.

Nice one. Caught in his own web of possessiveness.

Thanks Shashi! I’ve heard of such people, too much attached to the material things.

When a possession possesses the person who possesses it, well, who’s possessed right? A wise parable, Sadje.

Hard for me to understand people who are so enraptured by their possessions. But like your story tells there are people who value them more than other people. Sad.

I liked how you highlighted the man’s obsession with the car. He lost everything for that car! How sad to be all alone with the car in the end, but he got his just desserts!

Very true Colleen. There are people like that who value things over relationships.

Alfred’s dream sounds like a nightmare. If he can’t enjoy the car, what’s the point in having it? Perhaps he’ll come to his senses.
