It’s one of the jobs of a parent to prepare the children to face the world on their own. Some are wise and are well prepared in the rites of parenthood and do this job well. While others due to a lack of forethought or awareness fail at this important job.
I became a mom at the age of 24. Not very young you can say. But unfortunately, having lost my own mother at a young age, I didn’t know much about being a mother. It was a learning on the job. I am sorry to say that I wasn’t a very well prepared parent. I made many mistakes and it is with pride that I say that all my three children are better parents than I was.
It is so easy to become a parent and it is the hardest job on the earth. They should have a teaching course for people wanting to become parents and they should be given a permit for it after completing the training.

Parenting isn’t easy, as you said.
I am not a parent though, but I have seen my mother doing that.
She hardly ever gets a break.

Being a parent is terribly difficult. Having had not very good examples I read tons of parenting books. I can easily say I did better than my parents. I can just as easily say i made tons of mistakes myself, just different ones.

It is very hard with very slim margin of error. Thanks Lauren. I’m glad that my kids are better parents than me. I tried to be too much, did too much and it wasn’t the right choice.

As i was never protected I was guilty of overprotecting my kids.

Thanks! We overcompensate for our own lack.

I’m not a parent, but I have a child of sorts … my sister fell pregnant at the age of 19. She had a lot of help with raising my neice, from myself each weekends giving my neice hobbies, or financial support. To our parents helping in the week (Allowing my sister to further her own education in the process and obtain a degree). I can fortunately say my neice wasnt hindranced by this and instead has excellent manners, offers to help cook, clean or round the house at age 14 with no prompting (although I do think this made her grow up sooner). She has her moments as all kids do… but those mistakes trials and errors and bad moments i look back on as fond memories. A permit on completing a course however doesn’t sound too bad 😉 or a support network for those who need it.

Thanks Eli! It’s so fortunate that you all were there to help raise your sister’s daughter. Having help and guidance in the process of parenting is a blessing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

We all make mistakes with our parenting. I like your idea of a parenting course and a permit on completion. It might even help the overpopulation problem…

Thanks 🙏🏼 Yes, though this is an impractical suggestion, if only we could make it mandatory.

I remember when Justin was born, and then Jason 4 years later, we were so young, and didn’t know much. Was terribly anxiety producing and wonderful at the same time. Classes would be nice. They might even have some of those here. Anyway, wonderful post, Sadje, thank you for sharing.

You’ve said it. Terribly exciting and worrying. They should have classes everywhere. Thanks Jeff

I think people should have to get a license before becoming parents…but that’s just me 🙂 Sounds like you did a beautiful job! ❤

Thanks Zelda! I agree with you. Perhaps along with pregnancy classes they can teach people how to be good parents.

They say experience is a comb to a bald man. I wish I’d had my child now, I’d be a better parent and not make quite so many mistakes that I made during my early parenting years. Such is life.

I agree, being a parent is the hardest job ever. There’s a line in a song which says, your parents did the best job they knew to do.

I think that’s the best way to describe parenting. Thanks Deb.

I so agree with you about expecting parents having to take parenting classes!! There is a really great book that helped me with my two girls. Covers almost all aspects of raising a child – “Dare To Discipline”.

Thanks for sharing Chuck. It’s two late for me as all my children are parents themselves but I’ll recommend it to them.

It may be the hardest job you ever have, but it is also the most rewarding.
