An expensive mistake

For visually challenged writers, the image shows a collection of tables, chairs, lamps, baskets, teddies and other objects in quite a busy space.

Martha had always imagined that she had great taste when it came to decorating the interiors. She was also aware that not everyone shared this opinion. But she had a lot of confidence in herself and sometimes, another person would fall a victim to this deception too.

Mr and Mrs Jacobs were new to the town. They had newly come into some money and wanted to set up their new home in a grand manner. In short, they wanted to impress their new neighbors and colleagues.

Martha was their neighbor on the right. She met Mrs. Jacobs and convinced her that she would do a superb job and her fee was very reasonable too. After getting the contract for doing the decoration of the formal drawing room and reception area of their house, Martha took full charge of the assignment and left Mr and Mrs Jacobs on the sidelines.

The day they saw the finished rooms, it was too late to do anything about the decor. That evening, the guests at Jacobs’s home were bumping into chairs, sofas and end-tables, trying to navigate their way across the rooms.

It was a mistake that took a lot more money to fix.

  1. Reminds me of the adage that you shouldn’t hire your friends, relatives or neighbors. We did that with a realtor who did nothing for us. And another service person who, after contracting with them, never listened to what we actually wanted.

      1. I’m sure everyone does. We only learn through experience. And we just simple can’t believe that a relative or friend would do us wrong…

It is really just better to hire qualified folks for certain things, especially when it is their profession.

Also, always get several estimates. The cheapest isn’t always the best, nor is the most expensive the best either. 🙂

  2. I hired a decorator to help when i was redoing things in the 90s. I was charged a fortune for her yo look in sample books
She never provided anything i liked. Finally i went with her to the design room and within half an hour i found just what i wanted. From then on I’ve done all my own designing. Great story

  3. A relative or a friend could be a good professional if we are sure of him or her. Followup is very crucial in any activity to avoid last moment surprise
