What’s the opposite of…..

They say opposites attract and alike repel each other. It is absolutely true if we are talking about magnets (this statement originates from the study of magnets) but I doubt that this holds true if we talk about human traits.

An honest person won’t be attracted to a dishonest or lying person. Similarly, a fastidious person won’t be attracted to a slob. For humans, the appropriate adage is birds of a feather flock together.

Children of one family can be complete opposites of each other despite inheriting the same DNA and being raised in the same household with one set of values. I have seen siblings who are so different from each other that it truly makes you believe that each human is uniquely different from others.

And then you have the non-conformists! My younger brother was like that. Whatever we’d suggest to him, he would do its exact opposite. We learned to tell him the reverse of what we wanted him to do. It worked for a while but he figured out our trick and then we just stopped trying to make him do what we thought was the right way to do things. That improved the situation a lot!

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “opposites.” Use the word “opposites” or write about things that are opposites. Have fun!

  1. Wow, funny you should say this. I think exactly the same way. My friends were once saying how “opposites attract” but I told them birds of the same feather flocking together is the most human trait. We naturally gravitate towards people who are like us.
And about your non conformist brother- lol. Such people are fun to be around.

  2. I’m going to disagree Sadje. My husband and I have absolutely nothing in common. He hates what I like, I despise what he likes. We never agree on anything. Married 30 years now and I wouldn’t have it any other way

  3. I found my way here via Linda’s SoCs. I suspect you are right about opposites. They don’t always attract. Especially I see it in my family with your own example of siblings. “Children of one family can be complete opposites of each other despite inheriting the same DNA and being raised in the same household with one set of values.” I was even asked if my kids were from the same father as they were always like chalk and cheese – pretty much from the start!
