“Honesty is the rarest wealth anyone can possess, and yet all the honesty in the world ain’t lawful tender for a loaf of bread.” – Josh Billings

➰➰➰
We all claim to practice honesty
Yet a white lie slips blithely when we need it
Shying away from truth is so common
We say we don’t lie when we abstain from truth
Keeping quiet when we should have spoken up
Being honest when it suits our purpose
And being evasive when it doesn’t
Do we in all honesty, really practice honesty?

Oh! A powerful point…’We say we don’t lie when we abstain from truth”
How true.

but I like to think I’m honest 99% of the time, but you’re so right, at times those little white lies creep in so we are not unkind …

So do i and like you I admit to telling fibs so that we don’t hurt others.

Oh, I hope I do. But then again there are those little white lies!

Yes, too be honest, most of us aren’t 100% honest, always.

I think this is a great distinction, Sadje. Speaking our truth is important, yet, at times, for various reasons, we may choose to not always speak our truth fully.

You’re right! Many things get in the way of being totally honest. Thanks

“Being honest when it suits our purpose
And being evasive when it doesn’t
Do we in all honesty, really practice honesty?” Now, that is very very thought provoking! It’s bizarre how the human race has evolved to “use” even virtues such as honesty according to how it benefits them. A profound poem. Got me into some deep thinking.

Thanks a lot Sam. Yes, it is true and very unfortunate. There are many ways we can practice honesty. Telling the truth is one which is very much subjected to compromise. Being honest in all our dealings is very important too.

I really like this poem, sadje. So true! I believe no one can ever truly stay honest all their lives unless they happen to be ridiculously perfect!

Great use of the prompt Sadje. The novel I’m working on dwells on this point in depth

Excellent points made, Sadje! I feel many holds back the truth to not hurt the feelings of others.

Thanks Eugi! Yes that’s true. But we also hold it back to sane our own skin.

People are either dishonest or too honest and care nothing if they hurt you.

A thought provoking poem… we practice honesty when it suits our needs and then we invariably can’t help but be dishonest now and then.

Thanks Leigha. Yes, most of us take the excuse of law of necessity when we lie.
