Fandango is the host of Fandango Provocative Question

Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.
I know people who appear to be very spontaneous. I know that I was much more spontaneous when I was younger than I am now, and I thought at the time that my spontaneity was a positive trait.
But some criticized me for being too impulsive and for not always thinking about the consequences of my actions or decisions. As I grew older, particularly after I became a parent, I tried to be more steadfast, more constant, more purposeful, more reliable.
This got me wondering about the character traits of spontaneity and stability. And that brings me to this week’s provocative question.
Do you consider yourself today to be more of a spontaneous person or more of a stable person? Which characteristic in others, spontaneity or stability, do you prefer? Why?
➰➰➰
Sadly, even nearing the big 60, I am as impulsive as I was at 25!
Though thankfully I don’t make rash decisions, I do make impulsive ones. I decide on the spur of the moment be it shopping, or life altering decisions.
The paradox is that I am a planner! I plan my day and the tasks for the week ahead. I like things to be settled so that when I get up I know what my day is looking like. But at the same time, I can change my plans if someone suggests a fun outing. Or if something urgent crops up, I’ll change my plans in a heartbeat.
I think I like spontaneity in my life where fun is concerned. And stability in my life where serious life choices are concerned.
I admire my husband because he plans (sometimes too much) for our future, finically and practically. He is the stable guy in my life. I admire his stability, because one partner should at least be stable to have a comfortable life. At the same time I admire the spontaneity of my elder daughter who is always making fun plans for outings or vacations.
So here I am a mixed personality! A bit of stability and a bit of spontaneity!

I think some of both are needed. Too much of either one could be challenging or boring.

Exactly so Patricia. A balanced approach is required

Thanks a lot Lauren. I thought I was impulsive through and through but on thinking about it, I reached the conclusion that I am a bit of both.

Indeed! I am the same. I think being a planner and also interested in and actively practicing spontaneity also helps in accepting and embracing change.

That so right. This is the key. Being too stable can rob us of the ability to adapt.

I honestly think that most people are both spontaneous and stable at different times, under different circumstances, and with different people. Thanks for joining in, Sadje.

You Asked — “Do you consider yourself today to be more of a spontaneous person or more of a stable person?”
My Answer — Depends on the moment.
You Asked — “Which characteristic in others, spontaneity or stability, do you prefer? Why?”
My Answer — (Stability), it reduces stress when everyone is stable. No one has time for stupid anymore.

A little flexibility whether you are spontaneous or stable is good for any situation. There is nothing right or wrong, be whatever suits you.
