This week the Wednesday Challenge from partner Susan and myself is Unforeseen.

For a person who is as clumsy as me, there are so many Oops moments. Add to that I like to fix things. In fact, fixing broken electrical devices holds a lot of fascination for me. So you can imagine what sort of trouble I can get into!
One incident I remember from long ago. I had a Walkman, and it stopped playing the cassette. One side would work while the other didn’t and the tape would get stuck after a length of it was unwound in the player. ( I hope it made some sense)
So I decided to open it and investigate. As the device was already a small one, its parts were even smaller. I got to the stage where I had it all dismantled and by some chance, I managed to fix the issue as well. But when it came to putting it together again, it went very much the way of Humpty Dumpty!
If I got one tiny screw in the right place the other would disappear. The front-loading jacket was another game altogether. It got late and finally, I just gave up on it.
Next day I asked my father for his help. He also loved to fix things and together we managed to put the player back again in working condition. This did teach me a lesson, never try to fix things by myself.
Thanks Sue and GC for this visit to my yesteryears.

Sounds like a neat experience of bonding with your dad and a happy memory to hold onto.

It sure was. We, I and my father had many such adventures. All three of my brothers had no interest in fixing stuff but I did. So , yes these are great memories

I can relate. Its cell phones foe me, Quite a few “oops” moments: dropping them down sewer drains, breaking part off, etc. etc.. trying to “fix” them…Its a wonder I communicate on the things at all. LoL

Haha! A cell phone is even more tricky as you need special tools to even unscrew the screws in it.

What a great memory and post. I am not now, nor have I ever been, one to fix appliances or such. Now, give a garment that needs repair and I’m all over it. LOL

Thanks Lauren. I used to do that too. Could make dresses for myself and when I had kids, for them too. Always had a sewing machine.

My sewing machine is my friend. LOL
I will admit to enjoying taking apart furniture to repurpose it. I figure if I mess it was, it was already destined to be dumped.

I do remember those cassette players and how they would mess up the tape. I never tried to take one apart though. Glad you and your dad figured it out! 🙂

Thanks Barbara! They had a very tricky mechanism inside. I think it was a form of rubber band that helped to move both the spools.

A job often required in the jewelry dept was replacing watch batteries. Tiny screws🙄😀

Thanks Kate! I think you’re right. In those days even small appliances were costly and we never threw away anything that could be repaired.

we didn’t have such gadgets, wish more would repair and reuse these days 🙂

Yes, in my country, people can repair most things. We don’t throw stuff out but give to others, who use them.

exactly, I miss the cobblers of India who could and would fix most things 🙂

You are braver than I am! I have no doubt if I took apart something mechanical it would never be the same again. 😆

Lol! But I love doing it. Even if it’s never the same again.

I like to fix things too! Back when I had a tower computer, I would take it apart and clean it and the same with an old transistor radio I used to have. My hubby loves to fix things and is good at them, as well.

I always attempt to fix things but often end up handing over for someone else to finish! I remember how those tapes became loose, very frustrating. Thank you, Sadje for sharing this, 🙂
