Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge # 131 + Fandango Story Starter # 7 -The last straw

Fandango is the host of Fandango Flash Fiction thanks

Welcome to Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge.

The painting below is from Leonid Afremov at DeviantArt.

For the visually challenged writer, the painting is of a woman walking her dog in the park on a rainy autumn day.

Fandango story starter # 7;

As soon as she stepped into the room she realized that…

Lindsey opened the front door folded and hanged her dripping pink umbrella and led Izzy in the living room. As soon as she stepped into the room she realized that she had forgotten to buy what she had gone out in the rain for in the first place.

Now What? She thought. It was essential to entertain the guests they were having that evening well, but she was in no mood to venture out again in the rain. Hmmm…… let’s see we don’t have any wine to serve with dinner, but most people do bring wine as a hostess gift, so that is taken care of. Now for dinner itself….. she had makings of a salad and there were the steaks that were thawing in the kitchen counter. I think a steak and salad were enough, whatever her husband may think. Satisfying herself with these thoughts, she relaxed in the living room, Izzy by her feet.

But the evening didn’t go as planned. The guests, a couple of Barry’s older colleagues came with flowers, not wine, and the steaks were not cooked the way she wanted…. They were a bit too rare. While the salad was gone past its use-by date. She could feel hostile vibes from her husband but she wasn’t even looking his way.

After the uncomfortable meal was over and the guests had departed, Barry turned to Linsey with an angry scowl. “You have served the worst meal ever to our guests. I was banking on them to support my move for promotion in the next meeting and now I’m so embarrassed that I won’t even ask for their vote. What were you thinking?”

Lindsey who was fed up with her husband and his emotional abuse just gave him a blank look and calling Izzy she stepped out of the house. The rain had stopped and the trees looked lovely in their autumn colors.

Tomorrow she will find a divorce lawyer.
