Remembering life by the graveyard
As I sit here under the shady tree
My mind drifts to those we have lost
To old age and illness, to disease and accidents
And I ponder upon the life I am living
What have I achieved and what is my purpose
Does my life matters or am I just a statistic
These thoughts have a purpose, an aim
As I want to be sure that my being here is not useless
Looking at these graves, I realize that
These people have gone long ago, probably forgotten
And so shall I, one day not very far
But maybe with my good deeds I can leave
Memories in the mind of those, who’s lives I’ve touched
I sit by this graveyard and ponder on life

Very well said Sadje, yes we can only hope that our good deeds will be remembered by those whose lives we touched

Anyone viewing the galaxy and sees how miniscule we are in comparison understands that the worlds greatest person means little in the vastness of the universe.
If I look at my life as an educational experience, it all makes sense.

You’re so right! We have some super inflated ideas about ourselves. The truth is more humbling.

Good deeds can leave footprints on many hearts and those people will continue to live in other’s memories. Beautifully written, Sadje

A lovely sentiment, Sadje. Living on through actions we take today, in the minds of those we leave behind. Wonderful. ❤️

In my first semester of college, I had to write an assignment on how graveyards affect us in reference to Meditations in Westminster Abbey by Joseph Addison. Your poem reminded me of that essay. Please read that essay, I think you’ll like it.

I cannot walk through our local churchyard without thinking of all the people buried there, and all their worries come to naught.
