When you are strong
Then people take you for granted
They choose to ignore your pain and hurt
Thinking that since you don’t complain, you’re okay
When you are strong
You don’t ask for their help
Or cry tears of frustration when things go haywire
You struggle on your own, tackling problems
With resolve and determination to do it your way
When you are strong
Those near you need to see those unshed tears
That glint in your eyes but don’t escape
They need to look closely and see that you struggle too

Yes! By not allowing my girls to see my struggles, I unknowingly set impossible standards for them. We ALL have pain and need help at times.
I love this poem!🌺✨💖

Thanks Angie! I often feel that when we act strong, we disadvantage ourselves.

Beautiful thoughts and so true. Strength is not a garauntee everything is okay. What’s the saying – the bigger they are the harder they fall. I think that applies to mental strength as well as physical. Good work.

Sometimes it takes more strength to let the tears flow than it does to hold them within. There is no healing without the cleansing of the wounds.

Another of your poems that resonates with me! As a mom, I the myth of always being strong and put together can be so damaging. Beautifully and truthfully written, Sadje!

This is so relatable. When I don’t cry nor complaint, most often it’s inferred that there isn’t any problem. Tears flow only when we’ve been strong for too long. I love this poem!

For me this can be a double edged sword. My expressing my emotions and asking for help with mental health is not something l enjoy doing but I will do it. Where it becomes more difficult is when l need physical help. Asking for that l feel people will then see me as weak not strong

That is I think a dilemma that we create for ourselves. I’m in the same boat because I like those around me too think I’m strong. But I think we can, and should ask for help when we need it.

The strong are often not allowed to breakdown, but have bad days just like everyone else. Well done Sadje!
