Fandango’s Provocative Question #96- Deep or wide?

FPQWelcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question.

The provocative question today is simply this…

Do you think it’s better to have a broad knowledge base or a deep knowledge base?

A person who has deep in-depth knowledge is a specialist. Beingspecialistaboutfield.

We meet both types of people and we do need them both. A specialist is needed when the task at hand needs someone with deep knowledge and expertise. While a generalist is needed when there is a requirement to tackle more than one set of tasks.

personal preferenceI.

Knowledge should to be valued regardless of its breadth or depth. Both aspects are necessary for our survival.

  1. When I was still working, my role was to be a subject matter expert, or SME, and it required me to have a depth of knowledge about our product and services. But now that I’m retired, I’m quite happy at being a generalist, who knows a little about a lot and a lot about just a little.

  2. l love the comments on this post. I would too agree that I have some in-depth knowledge and also some broader or general knowledge. Today, I am mostly interested in learning more about the things I don’t know about. Nice post, Sadje. Fun. 🙂
