Cranny is the host of 1 Minute Fiction
What’s the ”One Minute Fiction” challenge about?
Easy. Each week I’ll provide a prompt to inspire you to write a very short story. The idea is to manage to type your whole story in a minute or less. Of course, you can think about it before hitting the keyboard, and you can take all your time to edit it afterwards…
Just make sure to tag your story with #1MinFiction, and create a pingback to my week’s challenge post, so I can easily find it!
So, here is this week’s picture;
~*~*~*~
She had to get out of here before they found the clothes she was concealing under her coat. She looked down the staircase but could see the store security.
She felt trapped.
Where was the back exit?
Can she sneak out without triggering the alarms?
She was startled by a tap on her shoulder, “if you don’t mind ma’am, the floor manager would like to talk to you”.
Her heart sank. It was going to be hard to explain why she was wearing four dresses under her coat, with all the security tags still attached to them.

I wonder if this is high enough
Or should I go to the next floor
Nothing is directly in my way
But maybe something should be
If only those tee-shirt carts were over, just a few feet
Would it happen faster
Or would they break my fall
(focused on the lone man, peering over the edge)

After I posted I realize I probably should not have. I did post it on my page, but with a trigger warning. Feel free to delete

heh heh! She didn’t think through her plan very good before going on her ‘shopping’ spree! 🙂
Good story!

I am imagining her to be a kleptomaniac, just urges and no planning.

Yup, it would be too disconcerting. Maybe she cannot help herself. 🙏

Younger got caught shoplifting when she was a teen.
I’ve never done it. I was always afraid of getting caught. I did accidentally steal something once. I felt horrible about it when I realized. 🤦🏼♀️😂😂

If done in desperation, it is justified to take something that I needs, not want.

Oh yeah, hungry people taking food, cold people taking a coat or blanket… absolutely agree.

Looks like she will have to postpone the runaway plans. She’d learned the trick from Heidi. But no plans to see her grandfather.
I loved your short story. I just needed more. I never tried to carry out that kind of thing but I know there are people who have needs or reasons to do so. Still, that tap on the back and comeuppance seems a deterrent for me.

I know some people get a “high” off of the adrenaline rush of getting away with it. My face would give it away in a heartbeat, I have no poker face. Never did see the point in it for “fun”. Well written Sadje!

Yes Leigha, some do it for the rush, others out of a compulsion of a Kleptomaniac and there are few who do it out of need. Thanks 🙏
