Thursday Photo Prompt- Balefire. #Writephoto – The first test

Sue Vincent is the host of Thursday Photo Prompt

Welcome to this week’s writephoto prompt. You can find all last week’s entries in the weekly round-up, which was published earlier today.

Use the image below as inspiration to create a post on your own blog… poetry, prose, humour… light or dark, whatever you choose.

For visually challenged writers, the image shows a hooded figure in the darkness, silhouetted against flames that echo its shape. The figure holds something in its hand that may, perhaps, be a wand…

White light and intense heat were coming from that balefire. She stepped back in fright because it was much bigger and dangerous looking than what she had imagined or intended.

It was exhilarating that she had done it, no doubt. But now she wasn’t sure what to do about this hotly blazing fire that she had ignited just by a simple spell. Her mother had told her that it was the first thing a witch needed to learn. And now she would be proudly included in the clan.

There was a movement behind her and she whirled instantly to see who it was but couldn’t see anyone. Then the movement occurred again, now to her left. She tried to calm her fear and pointed her wand in the direction of the sound.

“Show yourself or ……”

She couldn’t think of a suitable threat because she wasn’t armed. And didn’t know any more magic then lighting a fire.

A raven flew towards her and sat on a branch near her. Gradually he changed shape and now it was an old man wearing a long black cloak.

” You didn’t think that we would let you practice your first ever spell without one of us supervising, did you?”his tone was mock-serious but there was an amused light in his eyes.

” Oh grandpa, you scared the life out of me. I thought it was one of the other clans spying on me ” she went forward and got a huge bear hug from her grandpa.

They put out the fire and headed home. ” How proud your mother will be when I tell her about today “
