In the firelight

He garnered little twigs in a pile

Light up a fire to illuminate the site

Out here in the open there isn’t

A lamp to be lit, a bed to sleep in

Just him and his cat sitting in the autumn eve

A library book open to a dog eared page

Remembering the past with pain

Asking for clemency from his memories

What happened in the past never stays there

It haunts him in ways unimaginable

He is his own antagonist barring

Relief or solace from the guilt of past deeds

When will he forgive himself

So that others can do so too
