A birthday is such a looked forward day when we are young

As we cross the milestones and reach the miracle age we aspired to

We realize that growing up has much more to it than the birthdays

Being adults means responsibilities and problems that we have to

Sort out by ourselves, take care of money, bills and family all are

The gifts we receive when we celebrate each successive birthday

And then there are birthdays we rather not acknowledge nor celebrate

The ones which have a high number and lots of candles on the cake

Those are the ones we hope the family forgets to remember altogether

But a birthday can only be celebrated if we are living, so “A Happy Birthday “

Word of the week – birthday – (noun) – the anniversary of the day on which a person was born, typically treated as an occasion for celebration and the giving of gifts.

    1. Thanks Carol. Turning 40 is just awesome. It’s a liberating age. A very wise aunt told me when I turned 40 that “ Now you have reached the age where you should not give a damn what people think about you or your actions “ I took her words to heart and haven’t regretted them.

  1. Your post is awesome, Sadje! Though my cake was quite crowded with a lot of candles, I am grateful for every year. When people complain about getting older and such, I remember my mother used to say, it’s better than the alternative. Thank you for joining the challenge! 🙂

    1. Thanks a lot Eugenia! It’s my view on life too. When people say things like they don’t want to grow old, I always remember that my mom died at age of 26! So better be alive and older than not. Besides old age is liberating.

  2. Sadje,

Birthdays when we’re younger versus when we’re older are different and while in our youth we nothing but fun I appreciate each passing year that I reach because it’s certainly better than the alternative. Nice job on your poetic contribution for the word prompt, ‘birthday’. 🙂
