50 Words Thursday #18

Teresa of The Haunted Wordsmith says; When Deb Whittam retired from hosting 50-Word Thursdays, Kristian asked to pick it up and offered me a spot as co-host. Obviously, I jumped at the opportunity as I love this weekly prompt. Last week he was host, so this week, I am hosting. My prompt will go out at Midnight GMT on Thursday, and a recap will be posted by 10:00 PM GMT next Wednesday.

Elmer Gantry was drunk.

—Sinclair Lewis, Elmer Gantry (1927)

The stage was set. And the cast was ready for the first rehearsal. The main lead, Elmer Gantry was being played by a student, Williams who prided himself on his acting talent. When the time for the most important scene of the drama was being portrayed, Williams had a lot of difficulty in doing the scene. It was rehearsed so many times and every time there had to be a do over. Exasperated, the drama teacher came on stage and addressed him, ” Williams, Elmer Gantry was drunk, not sick. You have to make it look real” Williams was quick off the mark with his ready wit. ” Mrs B, I haven’t ever been drunk, so I have no idea how a drunk person behaves” Mrs B could see the justice in this statement, so she asked one of the junior teacher to play the lead, as he knew to act drunk.
